Update: Disney’s Frozen is now the top animated film of all time

by Master Pillow

A few months ago I wrote an editorial wondering if Disney’s Frozen would be able to top $1 billion USD in global box office gross and it did so in style. However, after this weekend it seems that Frozen has now leap-frogged over Toy Story 3 to become the #1 animated (3D or 2D) film of all time not taking inflation into account. At the same time it became the tenth highest grossing film of all time (without inflation).

It came down to the film’s absolutely last territory to be released but Japanese audiences have propelled Frozen to the undisputed #1 animated spot with a current total of approximately $1,072,402,000 USD. The previous record holder was Toy Story 3 which finished its global run with $1,063,171,911 USD.

Frozen is still playing in many markets but it is basically on its last legs as it naturally winds down. Being the film’s last territory to premiere the film is still pulling in big numbers in Japan where it looks like it has the legs to add at least another $30-$40 million USD which will push the film’s final gross above the $1.1 billion mark.

Here are the current top 10 movies of all time in terms of global gross (not taking inflation into account):

Rank Movie Global Gross
1 Avatar $2,782,275,172
2 Titanic $2,186,772,302
3 The Avengers $1,518,594,910
4 Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 $1,341,511,219
5 Iron Man 3 $1,215,439,994
6 Transformers: Dark of the Moon $1,123,794,079
7 The Lord of The Rings: The Return of The King $1,119,929,521
8 Skyfall $1,108,561,013
9 The Dark Knight Rises $1,084,439,099
10 Frozen $1,072,402,000

This is obviously great news if you are a fan of the film although one can’t help but wonder if these huge numbers will cause studio execs at Disney to seriously think about making a sequel. Disney hasn’t exactly had a sterling history when it comes to making good sequels to their animated films. In fact film historians will tell you that churning out cheap sequels was one big factor that led to Disney’s decline in the late 1990s and early 2000s that saw the studio being overtaken by others like Pixar. In short, Frozen is a great film but I really hope that they don’t make a sequel.
