As history has proven, the most interesting times for a true gamer appear whenever a new console is introduced into the marketplace. Past success or failures are quickly forgotten and what was once famous can quickly find itself riding off into the metaphorical sunset. Companies that once dominated can either adapt or perish. Just take a quick look back at the start of the 32-bit console war and how a little known company that was known for stiff-low selling platform fare suddenly became one of the major reasons to buy a fledgling console. That company was Psygnosis and their various first generation titles such as Wipeout and Warhawk set the gaming world on fire and convinced more than a handful of gamers that the Playstation was indeed the console to beat.
With the release of a new system come the lofty expectations of just how far the machine can push the graphics envelope. Most people do not expect masterpieces right off the bat, “Halo” not withstanding, but hope for merely competent and fun diversions to pass the time till developers hit their stride and truly harness each console’s latent powers.
