Trailer #2 – Transformers Age of Extinction (2014)

by Master Pillow

Here’s the second full-length trailer for Transformers Age of Extinction that once again shows that director Michael Bay knows how to blow things up with aplomb. In a summer movie season that most box office prognosticators deem as weak there is no doubt that Age of Extinction has a strong chance of topping the charts once again.

Love him or hate him director Michael Bay’s Transformers films have been huge hits with global audiences and there’s no reason to think that Age of Extinction won’t hit it out of the park. However, this fourth installment will surely be met with franchise exhaustion as well as the fact that the entire change in cast is a double-edged sword.

Surely, no one will make the statement that the loss of Shia LaBeouf will result in lower grosses but the big a change in cast carries with it much uncertainty. Still, exchanging Shia with Mark Wahlberg certainly makes box office sense as Wahlberg has proven himself to be a box office draw on his own whereas Shia has seen his star greatly wane these past few years.

Even if one thinks franchise fatigue will set in as viewers turn away to other films Age of Extinction still has a very good chance of making around $300 million which will enable it to challenge for the summer box office crown. In terms of total global gross the expansion of the International market will probably ensure yet another $1 billion + total and that means that Transformers 5 is foregone conclusion.

As for my thoughts on this particular trailer I can’t help but be befuddled as once again it looks as if Michael Bay is hell-bent on ending a film with a massive battle in the middle of a major city. He trashed Chicago for more than 30 minutes in Dark of the Moon and this time it looks like good old Hong Kong gets bashed. As a side note perhaps that is why Hong Kong hosts the film’s world premiere as a kind of consolation prize for having been leveled in the movie.

That said if you somehow edited out the entire new cast the footage looks decidedly too similar to past Transformer films which seriously dates the movie and makes it feel as if Bay might be quickly running out of original ideas considering this is his fourth kick at the can. However, I bet the film still makes a ton of cash.
