TV Featurette – Gotham (2014)

by Master Pillow

Well, I’m on a roll today with all these updates so here’s another one that is in line with yesterday’s Batman vs. Superman reveal showing the new Batmobile and, more importantly, Ben Affleck as Batman. Today we’ve got a featurette showcasing the new Gotham series on Fox that focuses on young Jim Gordon long before he became the commissioner in the Batman universe.

I really have no idea how this series will play as the concept is both rife with possibilities as well as danger especially since this is a Batman show…without Batman. Actually, that’s not exactly true as a young Bruce Wayne is here but unless the show flash-forwards in time it probably means that no one is going to see him grow up and wear the Batsuit for many years to come.

Crafting a show around a rookie Jim Gordon isn’t necessarily a bad idea as what it amounts to is a traditional cop show where he has to learn the ropes as well as having to deal with a rather uncouth senior partner. The problem, as it stands, is that Gotham looks to also be about crafting origin stories for basically every major Batman villain ever conceived from the Joker to the Penguin, Scarecrow, Riddler and even Catwoman. That’s a lot of ground to cover and I can only hope that the showrunners do not get blindsided by showcasing so many villains that they completely overwhelm Jim Gordon’s character arc.

It has always been said that the villains are the “flashier” roles and that traditional heroes come off as vanilla bland and so far all the footage certainly makes it look as if poor Ben McKenzie is being completely overwhelmed in terms of charisma by everyone else. It’s great to have strong villains but not if they become the focus while having the protagonist merely a sidecar passenger.

Not to mention, this series is on the Fox network which doesn’t exactly have a stellar track record for committing long-term to these sorts of high-concept shows. One need only think of Joss Whedon’s Firefly or Tru Calling or other shows like Almost Human, Millennium, The Lone Gunmen, The Tick, Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles and even Futurama. Yes, Fox has a LOUSY track record to the point where it is now a running joke that the network will automatically cancel any science fiction show no matter the outcome. It makes one wonder why they even green-light these shows in the first place if they always end up dumping them in the trash can.

Anyways, let’s hope that Gotham bucks that trend.
