Early Weekend Box Office – Neighbors opens to huge $50 million, Amazing Spider-Man 2 falls to #2
Hard-R rated comedy Neighbors is off to a very strong start as it has the potential to top $50 million in its opening weekend. The film’s marketing campaign has been stellar and the positive reviews from critics have only contributed to raise audience awareness. If it manages to rise above $50 million it will launch stronger than The Hangover ($45 million) and perhaps come close to what Ted ($54 million) managed to do a few years ago.
If these numbers hold Neighbors should have an easy time topping $125 million as there really isn’t direct competition until Seth Macfarlane’s A Million Ways to Die in the West which opens at the end of the month on May 30th. That’s more than enough time for Neighbors to lock up the adult comedy market and should guarantee it a very lucrative final gross.
Things don’t look as good for Sony’s Amazing Spider-Man 2 which looks to fall about 60% in its second weekend. While that decline is about in the range of most blockbusters the film hasn’t been holding up well this past week and things now don’t look very rosy for its final box office take. With Godzilla opening next week Spider-Man 2 should continue to drop like a rock and there’s going to be much handwringing over at Sony as there is the distinct possibility now that the film makes less than the original Spider-Man reboot which would be a major embarrassment for the studio.
The Other Woman continues to hold well in #3 spot and it should hit over $60 million gross come Monday morning while religious hit Heaven Is for Real is holding even better with a miniscule 30% drop and a cume of about $75 million to date.
Mega-hit Captain America: The Winter Soldier in 5th spot is getting closer to dethroning The LEGO Movie for top film of 2014 while new movie Legends of Oz: Dorothy’s Return has flamed out this weekend with a paltry $4 million opening take.
