Early Weekend Box Office Estimates – Captain America #1, Rio #2, Heaven is for Real #3, Transcendence bombs hard at #4
Captain America: The Winter Soldier keeps raking in the cash with approximately $24.5 million while animated sequel Rio 2 keeps pace with about $22.5 million. The first big surprise is Heaven Is For Real which continues the recent trend of religious movie dominance as it seems to be headed for a hefty $19 million take.
Religious movies have had a strong resurgence so far in 2014 with films such as Son of God, Noah and God’s Not Dead all doing decent box office business. The controversial Noah should top $100 million domestic gross and right now its global total stands at $251 million. Son Of God pulled in roughly $60 million domestic which is far more than anyone thought possible considering the film is just re-edited footage of the TV series, The Bible. As for God’s Not Dead it only cost about $2 million to make and so far it has earned $45 million USD.
At the rate that it is going Captain America should challenge The LEGO Movie for the top box office spot of 2014 although it won’t last long as the summer movie season is soon to explode in early May.
However, the biggest story of the weekend is undoubtedly Johnny Depp’s career implosion as Transcendence looks like a complete disaster as it looks to make only $12 million. Not only is that far below expectations but it also continues Depp’s string of box office flops over the past three years. The Rum Diary ($13 million), Dark Shadows ($79 million) and The Lone Ranger ($89 million) all underperformed and though those figures don’t look so bad the fact remains that Dark Shadows ($150 million budget) and especially The Lone Ranger ($200 million + budget) cost a ton of money to make.
It looks as if Depp will probably have to commit to Pirates of The Caribbean 5 in order to break this lackluster trend of box office disappointments and even that isn’t a slam dunk considering the franchise is showing signs of fatigue especially in Canada/USA. Overseas is a different story altogether as On Stranger Tides actually made the most money out of all the four films taking in a whopping $804 million for a grand global gross of a massive $1,045,713,802.
