Marketing – “This is For the Players” Playstation 4 Launch Video
Yes, the next generation of video game consoles is now upon us as the Playstation 4 launches at midnight with stores across Canada/USA opening to sell the console to those who were smart enough to pre-order it many months ago. Any console launch is intrinsically exciting and this one will be no different although I really sympathize with those people who haven’t pre-ordered their units and will have no choice but to camp in the cold for hours hoping to pick up an unassigned console.
As for my own thoughts I can sum it up as being: “Bring it on!”
Yes, this console generation has lasted far too long as both Microsoft and Sony kept dragging it out well past the best before date. That is not to say that there haven’t been any standouts the past year or two but graphically the Xbox 360 and PS3 have really been showing their age especially in comparison to the all-mighty PC. With the arrival of the PS4 tonight and the Xbox One on November 22 the battle for the next-gen crown has started all over again which means the Internet is going to be filled with fanboys and fangirls arguing which system is “better” for the foreseeable future.
Personally, I’m not technically sound enough to argue which game has a better resolution or which system has better specifications although it certainly is easy to discern if a game gets choppy as the frame rate stutters all over the place. In the end I really don’t care which system is more powerful as long as I am satisfied with the current game I am playing. If a game can capture my attention and imagination I really don’t give a hoot what silicon is under the hood of a particular console.
People have asked if I would be writing reviews for all these launch titles considering I am picking both consoles up and the easy reply is: not really. I’ll probably write some impressions down somewhere in a future post but don’t expect lengthy reviews as I just don’t have enough time to properly devote to each title….unless one game truly manages to impress.
In the meantime here is the launch trailer for the Playstation 4 which is filled with a ton of shout-outs to past Sony franchises. Can you spot them all?
At the same time this video continues Sony’s current marketing push that firmly embraces the fact that the PS4 is meant primarily for gamers. While this will obviously work wonders for gamers the real battle for console supremacy will, as it has always been, be decided by casuals and as such we’ll have no idea anytime soon whether or not it will be the PS4 or Xbox One that will resonate with those mainstream consumers.
