Anime/TV – Noir (2013) Update

by Master Pillow

It’s been a while since I provided an update to the anime to TV series project Noir but alas it seems it was stuck in development hell for a long time. Readers will remember that the Starz network greenlighted this to series June of last year with Sam Raimi and others in charge but it seems that they weren’t able to totally get a good handle on the show. Now it’s been announced that Ethan Reiff and Cyrus Voris the creators of the Sleeper Cell TV show have taken over the project.

For all accounts it still looks like this project will eventually come to fruition although it seems to be taking a much longer time than previously planned. As for my own thoughts I still think this is one of the easiest anime to TV show adaptations around but without seeing the initial scripts or some serious thoughts by Sam Raimi and his partners who left the project it is hard to see where they were getting tripped up in bringing this to the small screen.  You would think writing a pilot about two female assassins who discover an underground secret society that has helped shape human history for centuries wouldn’t be this tough.

As for Cyrus Voris and Ethan Reiff I have never seen Sleeper Cell although they certainly have a varied resume of hits and misses. Of note this is the team which wrote the story for the original Kung Fu Panda movie. Ethan Reiff is also currently writing the screenplay for The Karate Kid II although there’s not much info at the moment about that project. The duo are also credited for helping write the story for Ridley Scott’s Robin Hood which was okay although the biggest “bomb” on their resume has got to be that they wrote the abysmal Bulletproof Monk. Oh well, you can’t win everything. Still it is an intriguing choice to take over Noir and here’s hoping they can pull it off.
